Truffle Burger Triumph: House of Bun launches in Swindon's Old Town
When a real truffle burger graces the menu, foodies take notice. Friday, 4th October, Old Town will welcome the re-launch of restaurant 'The Pick Up Point’ now named *House of Bun* inside Old Town’s daytime favourite, Jacks. Open every Friday and Saturday night, this fresh concept promises a carefully curated burger menu, headlined by a standout truffle burger, crafted by esteemed Chef Josh West. And with a price tag of £25, It might be the most expensive burger in Swindon.
At the heart of this creation is a rare culinary jewel: fresh truffles from Wiltshire Truffles, a family-run business revered by top chefs across the UK. Founded by Zak Frost, a friend of Josh, Wiltshire Truffles sources some of the most sought-after truffles in the country. Hunting for wild truffles with specially trained dogs, Frost has transformed what started as a weekend hobby into a truffle empire and as a result these truffles are supplied into every Michelin star restaurant in London.
Josh, known for his rambunctious character and a flair for bold, authentic flavours, has crafted a truffle burger that is unlike anything else locally.
"Truffle oil lovers look away now!” said Josh, “Truffle oil is the Poundland cologne of the food world. All truffle oil is a synthetic flavour. It’s like sunny delight vs freshly squeezed orange juice. However people know about truffles because of truffle oil, so this is an opportunity to show what it’s real flavour is all about.”
“We get our beef from Walter Rose that’s raised on Stokes Marsh farm near Devizes and add 10% fresh suet to it. We make our own truffle cheese slices with mild cheddar, Gruyère, cream and grated black winter truffle that’s almost like a fondue that we set in the fridge. We make mayonnaise and grate in more truffle and Parmesan. It’s very simple, in order to get max truffle flavour. There are no superfluous additions or cheffy nonsense and certainly none of that ghastly truffle oil that has only served to mislead people from what true truffle flavour and aroma is all about.”
The House of Bun encompasses their Friday and Saturday night offering with a burger menu, and Josh is also taking over the Jack’s Sunday Roasts, as his Pick up Point roasts had become incredibly popular.
“It’s fantastic that a much loved restaurant is making such a huge comeback under a new banner and in a new location,” said Kris Talikowski, Chairman of the Old Town Business Association. “Josh has worked at top restaurants in Europe and the Cotswolds and we’re so lucky to have someone like that in Old Town. It’s a great sign for Old Town’s development as businesses share spaces and create new experiences for diners.”
